“You have almost certainly taken notice over the years, of one of those annoying old school sayings about positively accepting change in your life. But the steps to surviving change are not explained in a great positive one-liner… So we are going to explore the steps to surviving if not enjoying change!”
Wow!!! As change management has become my focus since the great stick of change beat me over the head for most of the year… Interestingly enough there is very little information for a plan to survive change… Aren’t you supposed to just roll with the punches? Doesn’t a journey of great change start with a single step? Or my favourite you must accept change with ease and joy!!! Well I must say I am thinking of opening my own Benjamin’s Bad Cliche’ Club… But with a certain amount of blunt humour let us explore how do we survive the wonders of change???
No one, especially me, likes change… So where do you start?
Firstly, one must identify the warning signs that we are not coping with CHANGE!!!
One of the major issues with signs of stress is that they tend to vary from person to person, which again can make people doubt that they need help or that they are driving their family to despair. But some of the signs include: grinding teeth, shortness of breath, tension in face and jaw, headaches, or feeling not just irritable but bluntly explosive with the world and your loved ones in general.
Well, it is one thing to identify the warning signs, another to identify what will “trigger” a stressful change response.
Please consider triggers to be like the straws on the camel’s back. One or two examples is a lack of sleep mixed with trying to pack up items. This can lead to a level of frustration when the items don’t fit correctly into a carry case… Now that can trigger a rise in our stress levels and make it more difficult to manage. Now if you know that you have problems with tetris style packing, you can aim to practise calming yourself before you begin.. For me it is always putting relaxation music by Tony O’Conner Rainforest Magic before I start… Or removing the other possible trigger.! For example do not have a late night out drinking and partying the night before! Or if you don’t get on with a family member “do not” invite this person to help pack up your stuff.
When you find yourself gripped by dramatic change, do not loose sight of your normal routines. For example just sitting and eating meals at the correct time can be a positive calming effect in the middle of crisis of change.
Looking after your health… You would think that this would be a no brainer, and yet it is often not the case. So making sure you get good food regularly, adequate sleep and enough hydration daily.
Take Note Of The Self Talk Voices In Thy Head!
Yes, we all have them! But when they do not shut off and you are not living a mindful existence (Please note the Term mindful techniques or mindfulness to an Australian male can be just straight Nansie Pansie!!!) But being robbed of the ability to live in the moment because you are too busy arguing with yourself or scrutinising every decision, over the changes in life that have been forced upon you… Suddenly Mindfulness is sounding really good!!! So instead of saying in your head that you cannot cope, you should say I am coping well even under my current circumstances and I can take a breath and calm down!
Practice Relaxation
Now some people cannot do this alone so check out The Diaphragmatic Breathing Technique that is revolutionising the way you can implement simple exercises to aid your stress management. For as Whitney Zweeres PTA teaches you the basics, it means for me, I can add in the sound of my Wall mounted clock that ticks loudly and helps bring me into the moment.
Learn The Diaphragmatic Breathing Technique
In this video, presented by Whitney Zweeres, PTA, it teaches the diaphragmatic breathing technique. This incredible technique can be used for stress and change management, pain management, relaxation, and the relief of anxiety. Using this breathing technique will help you to rely on your diaphragm rather than your neck muscles, relieving tension, and slowing down your breathing patterns providing relaxation.
