Osgood-Schlatter disease is an overuse injury that occurs in the knee of adolescents. It is caused by inflammation of the patellar tendon below the kneecap – where the tendon attaches to the shinbone. Those most at risk of this disease are teenagers who participate physical sports such as rugby league, soccer, gymnastics, basketball and distance running on bitumen or concrete paths.
Once a diagnosis has been made the standard treatment aims at reducing the pain and swelling. This may include the use of non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs and wrapping the knee until the child can enjoy activity without discomfort or significant pain afterwards.
Symptoms that worsen with activity may require rest for several months, followed by a conditioning program. In some clients, Osgood-Schlatter symptoms may last for up to three years – however most symptoms tend to disappear with the end of the teenage growth spurt; around age 14 for girls and 16 for boys. Those clients who have not had a successful resolution can then been referred to knee specialists and the possibility of surgery.
