It is with great interest that I have been following the establishment of quite a number of businesses in Townsville established as, “Combined Bowen Therapy,” practitioners and clinics. Google searches over several years have shown a rapid rise in the number of these businesses only to be followed by a slow demise and closure one by one. I was sad to see it and it was indeed a loss to Townsville, that so many people with an interest in being pain relief industry practitioners have subsequently been lost to our community.

When Tom Bowen first began developing his Bowen therapy techniques in Geelong in the 1950s, he quickly came to the conclusion that Bowen therapy needed to be a stand-alone treatment and could not be used in conjunction with other treatments such as chiropractic or massage therapies. He reasoned that being treated by more than one therapy at the same time, resulted in conflicting consequences for the human body and therefore impaired recovery. This certainly matches my experience over more than 30 years.  I have repeatedly seen patient recovery times take longer and be hindered when the patient has chosen to engage in more than one type of treatment in the same timeframe.

Of course, I am not saying that a clinic cannot have more than one type of treatment available.  Only that they need to be available from different practitioners.  If one person is taught Bowen Therapy techniques together with other treatments at the same time, they will not be able to distinguish these in the hustle and bustle of daily business and patient treatment will be impeded.

Learn only one treatment technique at a time.

Sure, learn differing techniques if you have the time and that quest for knowledge. However, separate these learnings by a year of more in practice of just that one technique, so as to properly separate them in your mind and practice.

Learn all about one technique rather than a little about lots of techniques.  As the saying goes,  “A little learning is a dangerous thing; drink deep, or taste not the Pierian spring.”

One of the most frequently asked questions by both Clients and Professionals in Townsville alike is, “Why does Bowen therapy not combine or integrate or incorparate with any other therapies?”

Tom Bowen demonstrated that Bowen Therapy is less effective, or will cease to function at all, if any other treatment was combined with his technique. This has been shown to be true when my own clients have chosen to ignore this and have, for example, had a massage a few days after a Bowen Therapy Treatment. The result?
